Stanley was a modified Volkswagen Touareg that won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge, completing a 132-mile course through the Mojave Desert fully autonomously. Led by Sebastian Thrun at Stanford's AI Lab, the team used machine learning for terrain classification — a novel approach at the time. Stanley navigated dirt roads, mountain passes, and unmarked terrain using GPS, lidar, cameras, and radar. The victory was a watershed moment: it proved autonomous vehicles were possible on real roads. DARPA subsequently funded the Urban Challenge, and Thrun went on to lead Google's self-driving car project (now Waymo). Nearly every self-driving car company traces its lineage to this race.
Stanley shows that competitions and challenges can catalyze an entire industry. The DARPA Grand Challenge created the self-driving car industry. IM should think about what milestones or challenges could galvanize its market.
