The most athletically capable humanoid robot ever built. Atlas can run, jump, do backflips, vault over obstacles, and perform parkour sequences that most humans can't. Originally built for DARPA's Robotics Challenge for disaster response, Atlas evolved into a showcase for dynamic whole-body control. At 5 feet tall and 190 pounds, it uses hydraulic actuation for power and electric motors for precision. In 2024, Boston Dynamics transitioned Atlas from hydraulic to fully electric — signaling that the technology is moving from research toward commercial viability. Atlas represents the frontier of what humanoid robots can physically do.
Atlas is a technology demonstrator, not a product. Boston Dynamics knows this — which is why they bet commercially on Spot and Stretch instead. IM should admire Atlas but emulate Spot.
