Honda's iconic humanoid robot, the culmination of 14 years of bipedal walking research that began with the E0 prototype in 1986. ASIMO could walk, run (up to 6 km/h), climb stairs, recognize faces and gestures, and navigate complex environments. At 4 feet 3 inches tall and 119 pounds, it was designed to operate in human spaces. Though never commercialized, ASIMO became the global ambassador for humanoid robotics and proved that machines could move fluidly through our world. Honda retired the program in 2022, but its influence on every humanoid effort that followed is immeasurable.
ASIMO is a cautionary tale: a brilliant technical achievement that never found a market. Honda spent billions but never shipped a product. IM must avoid the trap of building capability without a business model.
